Step 1: Realization that there are only three values.
Before you even look at all of the stats and what they mean, realize that there are only THREE values to choose from. A stat is either high, medium, or low. Not very high. Not very low. Just high, medium, and low. That's it! D:< More importantly, the value assigned is not based on the exact stats of the character, it's based on where they focus themselves.
For example- An elephant scholar may have a low strength, simply because it is not something that the character focuses on or trains. How big he is or what species he is makes no difference at all.
Step 2: Balancing the Stats.
This is simple. Too simple to be true! You MUST balance out every High stat with a Low stat. That's all. You can have more Low stats than High if you wish, because that does not misbalance your character in your favor. But you MAY NOT have more Highs than Lows ever.
Step 3: Understanding base stats vs saves.
The first six stats (str, con, dex, agi, int, wis) are the base stats. They are the only ones that you 'assign' a value to. The other three are your saves, and are determined based on your base stat values. Keep in mind, for the love of god, that those six stats MUST be balanced! You can have anything from all medium stats to three high and three low, as long as they balance out.
Step 4: Determining your saves.
To determine your saves, you take the average of the two stats related to it. If the two stats are high and high, the save will be high. If they are low and low, the save will be low. Medium and High makes the save High. In the end though, they too must be balanced!
Strength + Constitution = Fortitude
Dexterity + Agility = Reflex
Intelligence + Wisdom = Will
Say I have a character who's stats are...
Str- Med
Con- High
Dex- High
Agi- Med
Int- Low
Wis- Low
In theory, that's make both the fortitude and the reflex saves High, right? WRONG. You cannot have two High saves. It's unbalanced. It is up to YOU as the player to assign one as High and the other as Medium.
Step 5: There is NOTHING wrong with asking.
If you aren't sure, don't get it, or could swear I wrote this whole thing in pig-latin.... ask. I made the Q&A board for a reason, and I'd far rather you fess up and just ask for help than submit a character sheet and be refused because you couldn't grasp the stats.
